DESCRIPTION

Generative audiovisual composition based on AI and audiovisual algorithmic processes.

Pre(N)atura | Fonocene is a speculative audiovisual project inspired by postnatural studies, designed to explore the era of the Fonocene—a period where both human and non-human sounds define sensory experiences and interspecies interactions. In this narrative, Chthulucene beings—hybrid creatures, transformed fungi, and mycelial networks—emerge to challenge traditional forms of communication, using listening as a tool to activate our awareness of interdependence. These beings are hybrids of life that resist ideologies and transcend the need to belong to a specific purpose or identity, revealing an alternative way of being in the world.

Language here becomes an experimental laboratory, where creative programming processes—characterized by algorithmic precision—intersect with natural language processing powered by artificial intelligence. The voices of these entities, inhabitants of a parallel realm, are expressed through a metalanguage that combines ancient tongues such as Sanskrit, Greek, Hebrew, Aramaic, Chinese, Tamil, Sumerian, Ancient Egyptian, Nahuatl, and Quechua. This unique linguistic amalgamation deepens the immersive experience, blurring boundaries between human and non-human realms, where deep listening and catharsis become vital mechanisms for symbiosis and mutual care.

The scales within the Fonocene must expand, from the minuscule organisms in our microbiota to the farthest reaches of the Earth. These evolving beings, inspired by fungi such as Aspergillus tubingensis, which can digest microplastics and other long-lasting materials, present a series of messages in the form of an immersive concert. Their bodies emulate synthetic substances, much like the jellyfish Deepstaria enigmatica, and become instruments of breath, developing their own sound language. Through this, they invite reflection on the interconnectedness of all life forms, seen and unseen.

The sonic landscape of Pre(N)atura | Fonocene is created through live coding, incorporating foley and real-world recordings of natural growths and extinct species. These sound elements are processed and synthesized with sounds generated by machine learning, resulting in speculative sonic textures—glass flutes, living tires, and eerie organic instruments—that breathe in liminal spaces and endure in the harshest environments. This creates a soundscape that transcends conventional sound design, offering a speculative reflection on the sounds of survival, adaptation, and transformation.

"We are vibrating.
All matter on earth
shares the constant slowing down of sound
through our bodies."
